Directions, Transport and Travel To and From Bilbao University

It is very easy to get to and around the university. There are trams, underground subway trains, car rentals, and taxis everywhere. For tourists who want the freedom to explore Bilbao and its neighboring cities, renting a car is the best way to travel. The Bilbao Airport usually gives out a list of reputable car transport companies to those interested. Some car hire firms include Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and National Atesa.

Travel by Air


The Bilbao Airport has traveller-friendly amenities such as a bank, a foreign exchange counter and foreign exchange machines, several bars, restaurants and cafeterias, help desks throughout, the usual Duty Free Shop, taxi ranks, and car rental shops. The airport is located only 12 kilometres outside the city. British Airways and EasyJet offers daily flights from the UK to Bilbao Airport.

Car Parking


The Bilbao airport has allocated some 500 spaces for short-term parking across the main terminal building. Just behind the short-term car park is facility for long-term parking for some 400 vehicles.

Travel by Trains and Rail Travel


The Bilbao Metro train network is famous for being one of the most modern underground transport systems not just in Europe, but in the world. It travels to the northern coastline, connects several stations, and makes it easier to travel to beaches and bus stations.


The 'Estación de Abando' -- the main train station of the city - has trains that travel from the Bilbao Abando station to several Spanish towns such as Madrid and Barcelona, among many others. Near 'Estación de Abando' is the Concordia train station, which has trains that travel west to Asturias and Cantabria.

Travel by Buses and Coach Travel


In the southwestern part of Bilbao, between Luis Brinas and Gurtubay, is the 'Termibús' bus station where long-distance buses are based. The buses travel to Madrid, Barcelona, Burgos, Pamplona, Santander, and Vitoria on a regular basis.

Calle Sendeja is home bus stations that provide provincial and local tours and bus travel to the Plaza de Federico Moyua from the Bilbao airport.

Travel by Ferry


Two very reputable ferry companies operate in the Port of Bilbao - P&O Ferries and AT Ferries. Both go from Bilbao to Portsmouth two times a week. The journey takes a little less than 30 hours. AT Ferries provides the same service for a slightly longer traveling time of 34 hours.

Travel by Taxis


There are a lot of taxis awaiting tourists at the Bilbao Airport, right outside the main terminal building. Taxis are available 24 hours a day. Large hotels also have taxi services. Taxis can either be booked in advance or hailed on the street.
